AFC South Standings: Texans Can Clinch AFC South Division This Sunday With Help

The gang at Battle Red Blog boil down your Houston Texans playoff scenario to two simple steps this weekend: If the Texans win at Cincinnati and the Titans lose at home against New Orleans, Houston will snag its first-ever division title and their first playoff berth in franchise history. Even if the Texans lost out and Tennessee won out, Houston wins every tiebreaker. Here's how:

  • The first tiebreaker between two tied teams within a division is head-to-head record. The Texans and Titans, under this scenario, would be 1-1.
  • The second tiebreaker between two tied teams within a division is division record. The Texans and Titans would finish 4-2, per the scenario.
  • The third tiebreaker between two tied teams within a division is record against common opponents. This is Indianapolis (x 2), Jacksonville (x 2), the four NFC South teams, and the four AFC North teams. The Texans would win by one game – Houston's 8-4 to Tennessee 7-5.

And here's your updated AFC South Standings, and if the above scenario holds, this will be the last week in 2011 Texans fans have to worry about the Titans, Jags or Colts:

AFC South Standings

W L T PF PA
Houston 9 3 0 310 189
Tennessee 7 5 0 249 229
Jacksonville 3 9 0 152 238
Indianapolis 0 12 0 174 358
