DeMeco Ryans Only To Be "Pretty Close" When Texans Open Season

After suffering a torn Achilles covering a pass in Week 6 of the 2010 season, there has been nothing firm on DeMeco Ryans condition that wasn't related to sunshine and wishful thinking. Darryl Sharpton and Kevin Bentley are in place as backup middle linebackers and the Texans didn't address the position in the draft. Ryans went on with Sports Radio 610 today (a hat tip to the Examiner's Alan Burge for transcribing it) and admitted that he will only be "pretty close" to ready when the season starts.

"I'm doing pretty good. I've been running pretty good, ...still working on some change of direction and still getting more strength in my calf and foot but it's been going really well and I haven't had any setbacks. Just continue to ... you know ... each week I can do more and more and I've always been progressing during the rehab process." I think I can be pretty close once the season starts - whenever the season starts - I think I'll be pretty close."

Pretty close is not a term you want associated with your defensive captain and former Pro Bowler. The Texans have done a lot this offseason, but even they couldn't plug every hole the defense had last season in the draft. It would be a blow to be without Ryans. Sharpton would likely start in the interim if Ryans couldn't go--while he had flashes of decent play last season, relying on him would be another example of wishful thinking.
