Wade Phillips Has Benign Tumor Removed, Pushed Himself To Return

From the Gridiron Legends induction Saturday comes news on Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, via his father. This is the money quote:

According to Bum in remarks at the Gridiron Legends reception, Wade had "a tumor the size of a volleyball that encompassed his kidney and his gall bladder, so he had them all taken out. He’s got a scar about this long." At that point, Bum held his hands about a foot apart. Bum also said the tumor was not malignant. In visiting with Wade, it was obvious he’s lost a lot of weight. He said he’d be restricted to working from the upstairs for as long as the Texans season goes

Now, I'm not one to question Bum Phillips, but I think he may have been exaggerating on the size of the tumor a bit. Even if it were benign, a volleyball-sized lump in your abdomen is not good. Kudos to Wade for downplaying what probably was a pretty scary situation in the media before his surgery. Also, know you can understand why it happened so quickly.

Still, I'm even more shocked Wade was back on the job last weekend. That sounded like a pretty serious surgery to come back from in two weeks. More than anything, it's good to see Wade back and healthy after all this.
