Texans Free Agency: Lawrence Vickers Waived On Monday

The Texans fullback situation just got less crowded as Houston cut former Browns runner Lawrence Vickers on Monday. Well, actually, they just waived him, according to Vickers, but that saved them a little less than $2 million on the 2012 cap.

What does that mean?

Well, for one, it's a great sign for James Casey, who made big strides at fullback last season. If he can stay healthy, he proved to be a matchup nightmare out of backfield and a great receiving option for the Texans' offense. He's not the blocker than Vonta Leach or even Vickers may have been, but he's good enough to get the job done.

Two, it seems Houston is just shedding cap space like crazy. First, Eric Winston gets cut, then Matt Leinart gets kicked to the curb and now Vickers. What's Houston doing with all that cap space?

↵

That's the big question, I guess. Battle Red Blog took a shot at that when talking about Vickers here:

1. The Texans are clearing cap space to re-sign Mario Williams. Look, I realize that I'm terribly biased and also probably deluding myself, but I am holding out hope (at least until 3pm) that this is the correct answer.

↵

2. The Texans want to sign Peyton Manning. Please, no. Please? I said PLEASE!

↵

3. Rick Smith is on drugs. I have no basis for this, but we want to be thorough in our possibilities.

↵

4. The cap situation was worse than we thought, and these have simply been necessary cuts.

↵

5. Nothing.

6. [Insert your own theory here]

Since I've basically written off Mario Williams staying with the Texans, that'd be a pleasant surprise. Peyton would add layers of intrigue, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. I guess anything to keep him away from the Titans, yes?
