Yao Ming sounded pessimistic regarding his future in the NBA due to a possible nagging foot injury, but Rockets’ General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted that he’s optimistic regarding Yao’s health for the upcoming season.

Yao Ming is working diligently on his return and has consistently received positive feedback at each of his scheduled medical checkups.

He is currently participating in on-court basketball workouts & we continue to expect him to be ready for training camp which begins on 9/25

It’s interesting that there seems to be a rather different outlook when comparing the player’s ideas to the team’s, but hopefully Morey is right on this one.

Depending on how his foot injury heals, Yao Ming may be ready to call it a career after this season.

While talking to the Chinese media, Yao sounded rather pessimistic on his future:

“If the foot injury does not heal next season, I might choose to call it quits…the foot injury will not allow me to play so many games anymore.”

The Rockets' roster and championship hopes are built around Yao, but thet may soon have to move into the post-Yao era. However, this doesn't appear to be much more than an idea to fill space during the boring part of the offseason, and indications are that Yao will be healthy and ready for the season.

Though Rockets center Yao Ming has yet to decide whether or not he will opt out of his current contract, set to expire at the end of next season, he nonetheless expects to remain a Rocket for the foreseeable future.

Per FOX Sports Houston's David Dalati.

It is presumed that, since he's coming back from the foot injury, Yao will decide to forgo that opportunity and remain with the Rockets for the upcoming season. But, the Rockets' center has yet to formally confirm that he is not opting out.

"I think my future is still in Houston," Yao said Saturday afternoon at the Chinese Community Center. "Still, my agent will handle this. We will communicate with (Rockets General Manager) Daryl Morey and we will work this out."

Yao averaged 20 points and 9 rebounds two seasons ago in 77 games. He injured his foot in the playoffs that year against the Los Angeles Lakers and had surgery that required him to sit for the duration of the 2009-10 campaign.

Currently, Yao is rehabbing the foot, and all indications are that he will make a full recovery by the start of next season.
