It’s not often that the sixth-highest-rated player on a team’s draft board slips down to the fourteenth pick. But, against all odds, team favorite Patrick Patterson fell into the Rockets’ lap. Perhaps the club has the Golden State Warriors to thank for that. With perhaps the most surprising selection of the lottery, the Warriors took Baylor forward Ekpe Udoh, considered by many to be a lottery candidate, but by no means a top-six selection.

After Udoh went off the board, the dominoes began to fall. Suddenly, Greg Monroe was Detroit’s for the taking. And Al-Farouq Aminu slipped to the Clippers at number eight. The Utah Jazz found themselves a Gordon Hayward, leaving Indiana the chance to take their second Danny Granger in five years (er, Paul George). Once New Orleans decided that Cole Aldrich was the best big man available, it came down to the Toronto Raptors. Ed Davis or Patterson? Luckily, the took upside over production.

Patterson is a perfect fit for the Rockets’ ideology and system. He’s a hard-nosed, polished power forward with the maturity level of an NBA veteran. He’s a great fit for the flexible offense that Rick Adelman likes to run, as he can play the perimeter and even shoot a few threes. Patterson was perhaps the safest pick in the entire draft – you know exactly what you’re going to get from him: a solid all-around player with his head screwed on straight. The only things he needs to work on are basketball-related, which makes life much easier for the Rockets coaching staff.

Unfortunately, while Patterson may be a great fit for the Rockets, he doesn’t exactly fit on the roster. Currently, the Rockets have indicated that they would like to re-sign Luis Scola, and Jordan Hill was acquired at the trade deadline last February. The question becomes: who stays, and who goes? There won’t be enough room on the roster for all three of them unless Chuck Hayes’ team option is declined. Rarely will you see a team cut its captain, leading me to believe that some kind of deal will be made in the future. Whether it will involve Patterson remains to be seen, but until something drastic happens, enjoy your newest Rocket. He sure was a lucky find.

The Rockets selected Kentucky forward Patrick Patterson with the 14th overall pick in the NBA Draft. According to Jason Friedman's Twitter, there was applause as North Carolina forward Ed Davis went off the board and the Rockets knew their guy would be there.

The 6-foot-9 Kentucky forward averaged 14.3 points per game on 57.5percent shooting after being relegated to "the old man" role for the team as first overall pick John Wall and fifth overall pick DeMarcus Cousins dominated the ball. Draft Express' best case scenario for Patterson might be one that's familiar to Rockets fans: Carl Landry.

Per David Aldridge of NBA.com:

The Portland Trail Blazers continue to have discussions with several teams about reserve guard Rudy Fernandez, who has fallen out of favor with Coach Nate McMillan and has been seeking a trade for almost a year. The most serious suitors at the moment are the Toronto Raptors and Houston Rockets, with Toronto offering its first-round pick, the 13th pick overall, as part of a package.

No word yet as to what the Rockets may have offered. Then again, Houston seems to pop up in nearly trade rumor that ever gets leaked, leading me to believe that this may be nothing more than GM Daryl Morey calling the Blazers to check in on Rudy for kicks. If there’s a team that likes to work the phones whenever possible, even if it's just to say 'hi,' it’s the Rockets.

Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress nearly blew apart the RocketSphere this afternoon with a little tweet about DeMarcus Cousins.

NBA source says both Detroit & Houston are making a major push to trade w/Minnesota to get Cousins with the 4th pick. "His stock is rising."

While Givony is a reliable source, and while a deal would make plenty of sense for the Rockets, it's tough to imagine the Timberwolves parting with a chance to land a cornerstone player. They've also indicated a major preference for Wesley Johnson. By and large, if the Rockets were able to swap positions with the Timberwolves, it would be a surprise.

Most likely, Minnesota would be looking to land one of the Rockets' wing players, perhaps Trevor Ariza or Chase Budinger. They could also make a play for Jordan Hill and then look to land James Anderson or Gordon Hayward with the 14th pick. Among the many teams looking to trade up, the Rockets likely have the most to offer, and for a chance to grab a player like Cousins, they'll be willing to offer as many assets as it takes.

That said, keep this in perspective. It's just a rumor, and in most cases, the trade rumors that leak are the least likely to unfold. More on this as it becomes available.
