Jeff Keppinger may not have fractured his foot like once presumed, but his sprained big left toe is serious enough for a DL stint. Alyson Footer reported the news via Twitter.

Jeff Keppinger has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. IF Anderson Hernandez called up (purchased) from Round Rock.

Keppinger was placed on the 15 day DL, and is expected to return sometime in September. Keppinger is hitting .285 in a season in which he has developed from a utility player to the Astros most consistent hitter. With Manzella returning, Angel Sanchez may get playing time at 2B.

After scheduling an MRI for Jeff Keppinger, the Astros were prepared to lose their best hitter for the rest of the season. Jeff Keppinger left Monday night’s game with a sprained left toe, however, the Astros thought Keppinger may have also suffered a fracture.

Brad Mills and the Astros got a sigh of relief as the MRI revealed no structural damage, nor any fracture:

“He seems to be much better [Wednesday],” manager Brad Mills said.

Keppinger will presumably stay off the DL. Geoff Blum, Keppinger’s replacement, hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game.

Jeff Keppinger will soon undergo an MRI to gauge the extent of his injury in last night's game. After leaving with a sprained big left toe, GM Ed Wade and the Astros will soon find out if a fracture is present or not:

"There's a possibility he's got a small fracture. Whether it's an old fracture or new fracture, they'll be able to ascertain that once he gets the MRI done."

After arguably the best and most effective season of his career, Keppinger could end up on the DL and be done for the season. Geoff Blum will pick up the slack in the mean time, batting in the seven hole against Johan Santana tonight.
