According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Dominique Barber will crack the starting lineup at safety this Sunday as the Texans look to rebound from their embarrassing defeat against the Cowboys. Eugene Wilson, who still has skid marks from the game, technically has a hamstring injury.

McClain neglected to say whether the move was performance or injury based. Here's hoping that Barber doesn't make any mental mistakes (like say, leaving Chris Johnson uncovered wide so he can score an uncontested touchdown) so that there is no reason to want to turn back to Wilson after Sunday.

The Texans, desperately seeking help in their secondary, have reportedly signed cornerback Karl Paymah to a one year contract. Paymah used to play for the Broncos (surprise surprise) and was released by the 49ers in their final roster cuts. He's versatile enough to add value on special teams, as well. The Texans will have to make a corresponding move on their roster, and we'll update you as that news comes in.

Jason La Canfora broke the news to the mainstream, and also noted that the Texans worked out three other cornerbacks a day after head coach Gary Kubiak said they were going with what they had.

EDIT: Jamar Wall has been released to make room for Paymah. The Texans also worked out the following players Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson on Twitter:

Texans also tried out Al Afalava, Antonio Baker, Quintin Demps, Scott Starks, Victor Harris, Chevis Jackson, Schobel.

Afalava has some terrific FO stats, so he might be worth a look.

In a stunning admission (given his age) of their lack of pass rushing ability, the Texans worked out defensive end Aaron Schobel on Tuesday but didn't sign him. The story was originally broken by John McClain on Twitter, and My FOX Houston's Mark Berman has more:

"I worked out for the Texans Monday," Schobel said. "Part of me wanted to do it.

"It wasn't meant to be. We couldn't agree on terms. They saw me for what I am today and not for what I can be. It's over."

Schobel had said several times recently that he had retired, but the Texans and Schobel had maintained a mutual interest.

"I'm glad we made an opportunity for (the workout) to happen," Schobel said. "For me to say they made a mistake or I made a mistake, who knows?

"They have a lot of good players and are on the right track. It would have been hard for my ego to be a role player."

Boy, that's a hard pill to swallow if you're a Texans fan. The quotes seem to say that Schobel would be a role player instead of an every down lineman (which would have always been the case) but the second quote about seeing him for what he was instead of what he can be is VERY telling. Schobel, perhaps out of shape, put together a bad workout and the Texans declined to sign him for what he was asking for.

Why pull the man out of his house if you weren't willing to give him what he wanted? This whole scenario smells bad to me. The Texans can't possibly see Jesse Nading and Ryan Denney as pass rushing solutions after the past couple of games, and Schobel could have added something to that even if he did take a few weeks to get back into playing shape.

This reads, to me, like appeasement. Throwing a bone to the fans. And the fact that McClain, who has been the Texans concierge rather than any kind of investigative reporter, was the one who broke the story, only makes me feel more confident about that read.

The Texans will travel to Oakland to take on the Raiders in a game that should be about re-establishing the offensive dominance that they showed in their first two games of the season. The game will be at 3:05 CT at the Oakland Coliseum and will likely be viewed by nobody but you, me, and three guys in silver and black named Ted. CBS has the coverage, and as usual, Sports Radio 610 AM, 100.3 KILT FM, OR La Tremenda 1010 AM will be your local choices should you need to bust out the radio.

Oakland comes into this game fresh off a heartbreaking loss in Arizona where they missed three field goals and lost by a single point. However, they have been pretty mediocre against their two previous opponents, who were not as bad as Arizona, and there should be some hope that the Texans can resume playing NFL level defense against Bruce Gradkowski and company. Andre Johnson aggravated his high ankle sprain against the Cowboys and may or may not play. Even if he does play, he'll be shadowed by Oakland's amazing Nmandi Asomugha. So free tip to fantasy owners: don't bother with AJ this week.

In spite of the butt whipping they took from the Cowboys, 3-1 without Brian Cushing would be nothing to sneeze at. And the fear of this perhaps being a trap game seems to be gone. The Texans have opened up as 3.5 point favorites on the road.
