The Texas A&M search for a head coach has gone in many directions so far, with it first being reported that Houston's Kevin Sumlin was the head coach and then was not, or that Air Force's Troy Calhoun was a serious candidate for the job. Now the latest report -- which has literally sprung up from nowhere -- has the Aggies now making a run at Georgia's Mark Richt.

This latest coaching news comes from Aggie beat writer Brent Zwerneman who is saying that Rich is a real candidate to replace Mike Sherman.

Or it could be that Richt is entertaining other jobs since he is up for an extension with Georgia after winning the SEC East. Richt going to Texas A&M seems far fetched since he is coming off of a SEC East championship and a move to coach the Aggies would put him in charge of a less talented team and be playing in the tougher half of the SEC.

Louisville head coach Charlie Strong, one of the names that's been widely linked to Texas A&M in their search to replace Mike Sherman, issued a series of strong statements to the Louisville Courier-Journal Tuesday, indicating he has no interest in leaving:

"At some point, just trust me," Strong said. "I'm not looking for a job. I have a job. I'm the head coach at the University of Louisville. I work for an unbelievable athletic director; I work for a guy who has given me everything I have asked for. You have so much support from the university, from the city of Louisville. Now all of a sudden, a guy who couldn't get a job has a job and has some success -- why would we ever think now that he's just going to chop it and leave? The University of Louisville is not going to become a training ground for head coaches."

Of course, college football coaches have a long and storied history of issuing strong denials about a rumored position only to eventually end up taking it.

For now though, it appears that the shortlist for the Texas A&M job just got a little shorter.

The former Florida defensive coordinator has strong ties to the SEC.

With Texas A&M likely to begin interviewing possible replacements for Mike Sherman this week, Louisville coach Charlie Strong has emerged as one of the top candidates.

Strong, who has gone 14-11 in his two seasons at Louisville, is widely considered one of the top recruiters in the country, especially in the Southeast. He was the defensive coordinator at Florida from 2002-2009, helping bring two national championships to Gainesville.

One of the key selling points for Strong is his defensive expertise, as SEC West powers like LSU and Alabama are known more for their dominating defenses than flashy offenses like Kevin Sumlin's in Houston.

Strong would likely jump at the chance to become a head coach in the SEC, while Texas A&M has a much recruiting base than Louisville, a Big East school located in the basketball-crazy state of Kentucky.

Besides Strong, the two other big names that have been linked with the Aggies are Sumlin and Kirby Smart, Nick Saban's defensive coordinator at Alabama.
