The Texas A&M Aggies came into the Meineke Car Care Bowl game versus the Northwestern Aggies and probably asked themselves, "how did we get here?" Its probably a fair question, since some folks picked the Aggies to win the Big 12 this year and be playing in a BCS Bowl game.

Instead, they faced the Northwestern Wildcats in a December bowl game. In a game that the Aggies could've not taken seriously, they came out and put together a strong performance, finishing off the Wildcats 33-22 as the score doesn't do justice of how sound a victory this was for Texas A&M.

Ryan Tannehill finished his career with another 300+ yards passing performance, throwing for 329 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Swope and Jeff Fuller bother had another 100+ yards receiving performances, Swope caught 8 balls for 105 yards and Fuller finished with 7 catches and 119 yards with a touchdown catch in the first half.

Northwestern QB Kain Colter subbed in for a gimpy Dan Persa and put two touchdowns on the board for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter to make the scoreboard look respectable.

For Texas A&M, this is the end of their allegiance towards the Big 12 as the SEC looms ahead in 2012. A new conference, a new head coach and new expectations will be formed in College Station. Aggies fans, are you ready?

Now, the third-string tailback for A&M could be making his case for MVP honors.

Malena scored on a 19-yard run in the third quarter to push the Aggies lead to 30-7 over the Northwestern Wildcats in Reliant Stadium. For the day, Malena has 68 rushing yards on 16 carries for two touchdowns along with 5 receptions for another 23 receiving yards.

Although there have been no turnovers for the Wildcats, the Texas A&M defense has been stout throughout as Northwestern has only mustered 127 passing yards through three quarters of action.

Randy Bullock knocked in his third field goal of the game late in the third quarter, to push the Aggies lead to 23 headed into the fourth quarter.

The 2011 Meineke Car Care Bowl features two teams trying to end 2011 on the right foot. But it will also feature two teams honoring an Aggies lineman tragically killed in a car accident in December.

Both Texas A&M and Northwestern will wear black and white helmet logos to pay tribute to Texas A&M senior lineman Joseph "Joey" Villavisencio, who was killed on December 22 in a car accident while heading home for the holidays. The decals read "Joey V", and include his No. 67 and the Texas A&M logo.

In addition to the helmet decal tribute, Texas A&M has a player making a more personal tribute. Offensive lineman Danny Baker, who was a close friend of Villavisencio and spoke at his funeral, will wear his No. 67 jersey in the Texas Bowl. "Joey V," who rarely saw the field, will be on it in spirit on Saturday in Reliant Stadium.

No bowl team is in more transition than Texas A&M: After the Aggies meet Northwestern today for the Meineke Car Care Bowl in their backyard of Houston, Texas A&M will begin the transition towards becoming a member of the Southeastern Conference, as well as taking on an entirely new coaching staff led by Houston's Kevin Sumlin.

As far as today's game, outgoing interim head coach Tim DeRuyter, who took over the program after Mike Sherman was fired, will coach his first and last game for A& before moving on as the new head coach at Fresno State. Conference realignment, a new staff and then unexpected death of a player have weighed heavily on the Aggies as they entire the bowl game, courtesy of the Dallas News:

"Our guys know that there are coaches here very much like our seniors," DeRuyter said. "This is going to be our last game and we want to go out the right way."

DeRuyter tried to lighten the mood via fast-paced practices with music. He pointedly mentioned trying to remove "the cloud that’s been around for the last month or so."

Now he’s faced another challenge with the tragic death of senior offensive lineman Joseph "Joey" Villavisencio, killed in a car accident as he was returning home from College Station before Christmas.

DeRuyter called a team meeting before A&M’s first bowl practice in Houston.

"We talked about how life is so precious that you have to take advantage of every single opportunity we have," DeRuyter said. "We all hurt for Joey V’s family and all of the things he stood for. We absolutely have to go out and honor him by doing what he would do, practicing hard and competing hard."

Both teams will wear helmet decals saluting Villavisencio.

Even though the Texas A&M Aggies are being coached by an interim coach in defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter who also is juggling two jobs as he is the Fresno St. Bulldogs head coach, Texas A&M is favored by 10 points according to Odds Shark.

Texas A&M has shown all year to have a very good offense with quarterback Ryan Tannehill as well as the running game with Cyrus Gray. The Texas A&M offense is ranked No. 7 nationally while Northwestern's defense is ranked 81st in the country, so that is one reason why Texas A&M is a double-digit favorite.

Another reason Texas A&M is favored is because the this bowl game is taking place in Houston which means that the crowd will be extremely pro-Texas A&M since their campus is only 90 miles away from Reliant Stadium.

Texas A&M senior Randy Bullock has cemented his senior year with the type of awards that every kicker dreams of finishing their collegiate career with.
DeRuyter has been serving as the interim coach ever since the unceremonious firing of Mike Sherman shortly after the Aggies devastating 27-25 loss in College Station to their arch-rival Texas.

While Houston's Kevin Sumlin will take over next season when Texas A&M enters the SEC, like Urban Meyer at Ohio State, he will spend the bowl period firming up the school's 2012 recruiting class and assembling his own coaching staff.

Even amidst all the coaching turnover, the bowl game is still very important to the Aggies highly-decorated senior class, as a win would give the team a winning season while also being their first post-season victory since the 2001 Gallery Furniture Bowl.
