Lots of people have already expressed how grateful they've been for this season, so I thought I'd go a different way. Instead of recapping what I liked and didn't like about this game, let's talk about what I was grateful for this season

Something unexpected happened in the Texans' 20-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens Sunday. Not in the game, mind you, since that went down pretty much how I thought it might. Houston was in it, had a chance to win after a huge game by Arian Foster and a dominant defensive effort.

No, the unexpected thing was how disappointed I was that they lost. I went in expecting them to lose and came out the other side mad that they wouldn't be playing in New England next weekend. Never dreamed that might happen before the season and it was a good feeling, despite the pain at the loss.

Lots of people have already expressed how grateful they've been for this season, so I thought I'd go a different way. Instead of recapping what I liked and didn't like about this game, let's talk about what I was grateful for this season:

Wade Phillips: Dude is just a beast. I still can't get over the fact he was on the sidelines against the Ravens, not a month after having his gallbladder and a very significant tumor removed from his abdomen. Not to mention what he did with a Texans' defense that didn't have the benefit of an offseason to develop, switched schemes and added different starters all over the field. The fact that he's staying around makes it even better.

Mostly, I'm grateful for seeing proof about how much good coaching can affect a team. Good players can still make a coach look like a genius, but what Phillips did was put good players in position to be great. That was nice to see.

Arian Foster: Despite the fumbles and hint of an attitude, Foster is the best back I've seen in Houston. Period. I'm not old enough to remember Earl Campbell, but Foster easily trumps everyone in Texans history. His combination of speed and power, plus his field vision and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield make him very, very dangerous. When he was on, it was a treat watching him run.

Connor Barwin: He's kinda crazy. He had that weird shotgun sack dance, but Barwin was the most consistent pass rusher maybe in team history this season. The Texans rushed the passer in a number of ways, but it all starts with Barwin. Though they lost Mario Williams, his replacement Brooks Reed did pretty well. I'm not sure the Texans would have been able to overcome a loss of Barwin.

J.J. Watt: My favorite rookie since...well, maybe Cushing? It's easy to like guys with big motors, from his tackles 15 yards downfield or his relentless sacks in the pocket. His INT return against Cincinnati may be his defining moment of the season, but he was so much more in many games. The other impressive thing about Watt is he never really hit a rookie wall, playing better in the second half of the season than he did early on. That's a pretty good mark of a rare and special player, even if he doesn't play a flashy position in this defense.

Johnathan Joseph: Not since the days of Aaron Glenn has a cornerback gotten so much respect in Houston. Dunta Robinson was even targeted and challenged more than Joseph was this season. The fact he stayed healthy for the entire season was also a very pleasant surprise and worth the contract he was given.

Gary Kubiak: Just a fine effort from a coach who could have been fired. He's a great offensive mind and had the Houston passing and rushing attacks clicking as well as anyone before Schaub went down with that foot injury. He held the team together after that. If you liked what T.J. Yates did in his limited time, thank Kubes. He was a big part of Yates' development late in the year.

T.J. Yates: Give credit where credit is due. The rookie got played by Ed Reed and Ray Lewis Sunday, locked onto receivers and didn't really go through his progressions all that well. Plus, he wasn't all that accurate on his deep ball, when he bothered to throw it. But, the man stepped in and won a playoff game. He made plays when he needed to in a very tough situation.

Brian Cushing: Was there a better symbol for this defensive renaissance than Cushing's Eternally Bloody Nose? I think not.

There's scathing local criticism in the media, and then there's this lede from the Houston Chronicle:

Jacoby Jones will be the most chastised, cussed and criticized figure in Houston sports for the foreseeable future.

And, well, he deserves it.

Jones is public enemy number one to the Houston media after mishandling a punt in the first quarter that would lead to the Ravens' first score of the game. With the Texans leading 3-0 four minutes into the game, Jones attempted to field a bouncing punt near the Houston 10-yard-line. It skipped off his hands and Baltimore recovered just two yards shy of the end zone, where they'd soon score. Jones' logic (courtesy of CBS Sports):

"The way it bounced, I wasn't trying to get us pinned down there. I was really trying to hurry and grab it and get down but it hit off my facemask."

There were plenty of plays that combined to create Houston's loss on Sunday - rookie quarterback T.J. Yates threw three interceptions, for one - but in hindsight, Jones' opening proved the scoring difference. His recalcitrance afterwards probably didn't help matters, either:

Jones dressed slowly Sunday, attempting to lighten the mood by suggesting to reporters they might want to speak with rookie defensive end J.J. Watt instead because, in Jones’ words, he "hadn’t done (expletive)."

That’s only partly true. Oh, he did plenty. His gaffe – opting to field a punt that took several bounces in front of the fifth-year veteran at the Texans’ 13 and not being able to handle the football – is already part of franchise lore.

The Houston Texans had two cracks at it but Baltimore's Ed Reed wasn't having any of it. The veteran safety came up with an interception and then batted away a fourth down desperation heave by T.J. Yates with just 11 seconds remaining and the Ravens leading 20-13.

Early on it looked like the Ravens might run away with the victory before the Texans rallied behind a solid performance from Arian Foster. The Texans would fall behind 17-3 before the Texans would rattle off 10 unanswered points. Baltimore added a late field goal to set up Houston's desperation heaves.

Two of those turnovers came on interceptions thrown by T.J. Yates in the fourth quarter with the Texans trailing 20-13. Yates would finish 17 of 35 for 184 yards with three interceptions. Andre Johnson was Yates best target catching eight passes for 111 yards.

Arian Foster had a big game on the ground with 27 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. Foster's lone touchdown run cut Baltimore's lead to 17-13 but the Texans were unable to get any closer in the game.

Joe Flacco did a nice job of managing the game for the Ravens throwing for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Most importantly he didn't turn the ball over in the game. Ray Rice carried 21 times for 60 yards and Anquan Boldin caught four balls for 73 yards.

With the win, Baltimore advances to the AFC Championship game where they will take on the New England Patriots at Foxboro.

With the Houston Texans trailing 20-13, Baltimore safety Ed Reed attempted to slam the door shut with his eighth career post-season interception. The interception was Texans' quarterback T.J. Yates third of the day. Houston is hoping to get one more shot at it despite Yates struggles going 16 of 31 for 175 yards thus far.

Arian Foster has had a big day on the ground piling up 132 yards against a stingy Baltimore defense but the Texans are likely to be in pass mode if they get their hands on the ball again.

After an up and down first half for both teams, the third quarter has been a battle of each teams defenses and bottling up the offenses as a result. Baltimore seemed poised to score after a ridiculous one-handed 30-yard catch by Lee Evans (yes, he's still alive) that got the Ravens down to the goal line. On 4th-and-1, Jim Harbaugh sent out his Baltimore Ravens offense to score a touchdown that could've put the game out of reach...

...and the Houston Texans defense stood tall.

Tim Dobbins plugged the hole that Ray Rice attempted to rush through and the Texans earned a turnover on downs.

The Texans had an earlier opportunity to score, but Neil Rackers somehow managed to hit the front crossbar on a 50-yard field goal attempt that would've closed the gap to 1.

The Ravens have the ball to begin the fourth quarter, here is the video of Lee Evans' ridiculous one-handed catch.

The Houston Texans survived an almost fatal first quarter as two costly turnovers helped the Baltimore Ravens to put up two touchdowns on the board and give the Ravens a 17-3.

However, the Texans showed the resolve that has helped them get as far as they have this season, as Houston head Gary Kubiak made some adjustments and empowered T.J. Yates to go out and execute. The result? Two time-consuming scoring drives taking up over ten minutes of time in the second quarter and putting up ten points to close the lead to 17-13.

Arian Foster's performance in the first half has been truly awe-inspiring. His 15 carries for 95 rushing yards has helped swing some momentum back on the Texans side, and his one-yard touchdown plunge made it a competitive game again in Baltimore. Foster also has 4 catches for another 29 receiving yards.

Here is video of Arian Foster's one-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, as Baltimore will receive the ball in the second half. The Texans have given up two touchdown passes, but Joe Flacco is just 6-of-15 passing for 80 yards.

A long kickoff return gave the Texans good field position and a Neil Rackers field goal gave Houston a 3-0 lead. Then, the Texans forced a 3-and-out and the Ravens had to punt.

Then things went downhill from there.

Then, a LarDarius Webb interception on a poor read by T.J. Yates who seemed determined to throw the ball to a blanketed Andre Johnson. After the turnover, Joe Flacco found Anquan Boldin on a ten-yard touchdown to push the lead to 17-3.

Here is the video of the interception by LarDarius Webb on T.J. Yates.

Mistakes have ruled the day, and this Texans team might not be built to dig themselves out of such a hole. There's still plenty of time left, and Houston will have to figure something out before they get rolled in Baltimore.

The Houston Texans had the Baltimore Ravens right where they wanted them. Danieal Manning's long kick return lead to early points for his squad, then the defense took the field and got a 3-and-out to give the offense the ball back as the Ravens would punt.

About that punt though. Yikes.

Punter returner Jacoby Jones looked to field Baltimore's punt amidst pressure by the Ravens gunners Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith. Jones muffed the punt, Williams restrained him from recovering the fumble and Smith recovered at the two-yard line. The Ravens would score on a Joe Flacco touchdown pass to 3rd-string tight end Kris Wilson just moments later.

For now, here's the gif that Texans fans will probably just like to forget about as soon as possible.
