John McClain of the Houston Chronicle Tweeted an interesting observation about the Texans' upcoming 2012 schedule that might cast the record setting 2011 defense in a little bit of doubt:

Texans play 4 QBs they didn't play last year: Manning, Brady, Rodgers and Stafford. They'll challenge 2nd-ranked def.

— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) April 16, 2012

Houston finished with the league's best total defense (263.5 yards a game, almost 60 yards better than No. 2 Baltimore) and second in passing defense (182 yards per game), but did so in a season that featured no Peyton Manning in Indianapolis, a rookie quarterback in Jacksonville and a platoon of Matt Hasselbeck and rookie Jake Locker in Tennessee.

Combine a weak passing division with a little bit of scheduling luck - beating a Raiders team pre-Carson Palmer, picking on Chad Henne in Miami - and the stats seem a little padded. On the other hand, this is the same defense that outright nullified Ben Roethlisberger and forced two interceptions and 23 incompletions from Matt Ryan.

But Drew Brees, arguably the league's best quarterback (statistically, at least) shredded the Texans in September for 3 TDs and 370 yards. Then again, he did that to almost every team in the league.

Is it fair to call the Texans defense the best in 2011 if they missed the likes of Eli, Brady and Rodgers?

Go ahead and ask any of the Houston Texans players about the offseason moves the organization has been making. They'll tell you about how optimistic they are at the start of offseason workouts and how much they're looking forward to making another playoff run in the 2012 season.

The most common sound bite you'll get, more or less, is this one: "It's a business." A quote almost reminiscent of the NFL lockout conversation, and the Texans players are singing the same song.

Matt Schaub had this to say Monday at the team's first workout:

"It's the harsh reality of this business when you lose some players, whether in free agency or trades, but it is part of the business. We have a spectacular core-nucleus of guys taking our back and looking forward to climbing the ladder and taking the next step."

But there's panic in Houston. The Texans fell short to a Baltimore Ravens team in the playoffs last season they could have defeated under different circumstances. What's interesting, though, is how the panic is focused more on what the Texans failed to do in the offseason, instead of what they proved about their actual system last season.

It would be a bigger concern that Joel Dreesen signed with the Denver Broncos had I not seen Houston win games without the likes of Schaub, Arian Foster, Andre Johnson, Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans in different stretches of the 2011 season.

Letting Eric Winston go didn't make a lot of sense but as Owen Daniels put it...

"... that's just the nature of the beast. That's the way things go. New players come in."

The only questions that seem to matter are whether or not the team can rely on Schaub to stay healthy. And to be fair, that goes for Andre and Arian as well. Then you have to wonder what the Texans' schedule is going to look like, knowing they play some of the league's better squads unlike last season.

We saw how the front office went about taking care of its business, but more importantly, how will this familiar-face depleted group of players take care of theirs?

Houston Texans fans don't have much of a reason to feel as if their team got better over the offseason after losing the likes of Mario Williams, Joel Dreesen, Eric Winston and DeMeco Ryans. But the players, as to be expected, were very positive in their comments regarding the offseason on the first day of workouts on Monday.

Here is a little of what they had to say about the offseason:

"It's the harsh reality of this business when you lose some players, whether in free agency or trades, but it is part of the business. We have a spectacular core-nucleus of guys taking our back and looking forward to climbing the ladder and taking the next step. But we're excited to be here and excited to get going with workouts and the offseason. It goes by pretty quick each year when we're back out here but we're excited and eager to get going." - Matt Schaub

"I think, as a player, that's just part of the business. I think we've been lucky that it hasn't happened more so in previous years. Obviously, I wish all those guys the best but we still got a lot of good players here and a lot of guys that contributed and a lot of up-and-coming guys that we're excited about. I try to focus not necessarily more on who's gone; you have to give them credit for helping and contributing to get us where we got to, but a lot of the guys here have been working hard to continue that process. We're really excited about that." - Owen Daniels

"I felt like it was an opportunity to step up and show what I can do [and] compete for the spot. That's about it." - Garrett Graham on his initial thoughts when Dreesen signed with the Denver Broncos

"Obviously, that's part of football. Each offseason, every team looks different each and every year. That's part of the adjustment you have to make on the run. With us, we have a number of guys who are capable of stepping up and now have the opportunity. For us, we just have to look forward and move forward." - Johnathan Joseph

"I'm excited to be back. We had a nice little break, but I'm excited to be back with the guys, with the team, and starting our journey for next year. I think it'll be good, getting a chance to go through the offseason. Last year, we were locked out and when we came back, it was straight into camp and so we were still learning the defense as we were going through the season. So I think getting a chance to have an offseason and work with the guys, work with the coaches and dive more into our playbook and more into our looks and things like that, I think we'll benefit from it." - Glover Quin

The Texans quarterback should be 100 percent by the time training camp begins.

The Houston Texans will begin their offseason workouts Monday, but while quarterback Matt Schaub will be there, he will not be participating in any team drills.

Schaub, who is recovering from a Lisfranc injury he sustained last November, is expected to be 100 percent by training camp.

Houston does expect to see a fully healthy Andre Johnson on Monday. The All-Pro wide receiver struggled with hamstring problems last season but seemed to be over them by the end of the season.

The Texans will get a 10-week window for their nine-week offseason programs. Programs cannot exceed four workouts per player in a week and they are limited to weekdays. These initial practices are entirely voluntary, with mandatory minicamps not starting until June.

There will be three phases to the workouts, all spelled out in the CBA.
