The Texas A&M Aggies performed admirably during this college baseball season and set themselves apart from the others in their final season in the Big 12 conference. However, as the Aggies entered into conference tournament action, things have been less than grand for the boys from College Station.

Per the good folks at Perfect Game, things have gone from good to not so much.

The Aggies looked fantastic in their Big 12 tournament opening game against Kansas, but things went downhill fast the past two days, dropping rough contests to Missouri and Kansas, both bad RPI teams. In other words, the Aggies went from national seed contenders to just being glad to host an NCAA Regional.

The Aggies will need to regroup as the regionals are coming up soon. Can they recover to make a deep run?

Despite losing games in their respective conference tournaments, both Texas A&M and Rice are still expected to be a regional host. Not only are the two schools projected to host they both are on the cusp of earning one of the eight national seeds.

However, the Joseph Durate of the Houston Chronicle believes that Rice's chance at a national seed is gone since they have been eliminated from playing for the Conference USA championship//

Durate could be right Rice has very little way to improve their chance at a seed since they have one game left against against Southern Miss in pool play of the Conference USA tournament.

Texas A&M still has a chance to win the Big 12 tournament and if they can win their conference tournament that would go a long way in earning a national seed.

With conference tournaments underway there will be daily, if not hourly, changes in who plays where in the NCAA tournament. One loss that has changed the regional hosting was when top-seeded LSU took an unexpected 3-2 loss to No. 7 seeded Mississippi State. LSU can still back door its way into the SEC title game, but their chances of hosting a region is now in question.

Texas A&M is pegged to host a regional and they are still looking good at achieving that goal after defeating Kansas in the opening round of the Big 12 tournament. The next step for Texas A&M would be for the Aggies to earn a national seed, but as of Thursday morning they are on the cusp of earning that.

The other local team who is expected to host a regional is Rice who so far is 1-0 in pool play at the 2012 Conference USA tournament after defeating Houston 7-5 in their first game. Rice is in the same situation as Texas A&M in that they are just on the outside of earning a national seed, but earning a bid to the NCAA tournament is wrapped up.

The latest NCAA baseball regional projections have LSU, Rice and Texas A&M as hosts of four-team regionals, while the Sam Houston State Bearkats would play at Baylor.

In the LSU regional, Texas, Saint Louis, and Tulane will be pitted against each other.

Rice would host Clemson, Oral Roberts and Southeastern Louisiana. The Aggies would host Arkansas, Valparaiso and Dallas Baptist. Sam Houston would compete against Baylor, TCU and Prairie View A&M.

LSU, Rice, Sam Houston and Baylor all have automatic bids after winning their respective conference regular season titles. Sam Houston is the only team that isn't the favorite to win its region, because of the Bears standing in the way. But Rice, LSU and Texas A&M are all expected to win their respective regions, barring upsets of epic proportions.

At this point last week, the Tigers were a virtual shoo-in for one of the eight national seeds, but a series loss at home to Vanderbilt has given the experts pause.

Sayeth Aaron Fitt at Baseball America:

Last week, we had LSU listed in the SECURE category, and this week we've got the Tigers outside the top eight. Turns out we were a little hasty with that SECURE label. We were assuming the Tigers would take care of business and win a home series against Vanderbilt, but losing that series has created a situation where the winner of the LSU-South Carolina series this weekend is likely to earn the SEC's third national seed, while the other team could miss out.

The Tigers are still set to host unless something very crazy happens this week and during the SEC Tournament next weekend, so at this point it's solely a matter of capturing the coveted national seed and home field for Super Regionals.

SEBaseball.com thinks LSU will not be a national seed, but has them hosting St Louis, Miami, and Southeastern Louisiana.

Perfect Game also holds the Tigers out of the top eight, and sends Texas, Tulane, and Southern to Baton Rouge.

ESPN gives the Bayou Bengals the number eight overall seed, with Georgia Tech, Tulane, and Southern playing at The Box.

The latest round of regional projections came out yesterday, and it seems most experts agree that Sam Houston State will be a three-seed somewhere within Texas.

The Bearkats are fresh off clinching the Southland Conference championship, but that won't be enough to bump them to a two-seed, due to their RPI (49) and strength of schedule (109).

Kendall Rogers at Perfect Game has SHSU playing in the College Station regional along with two-seed Arkansas and four-seed Army.

SEBaseball.com also has the Bearkats playing in Aggieland (CONSPIRACY, Y'ALL), but they're matched up with Arizona and Oral Roberts.

The fine folks at the World Wide Leader send the 'Kats to Waco to play TCU and Oral Roberts, along with Baylor.

A lot can happen between now and Selection Sunday in two weeks, especially if A&M loses on the road to Oklahoma State. So while Sam Houston is pretty much a lock as a three-seed, they'll have to see how their fellow Texans finish up before the picture becomes clearer.

Even though there are only two weekends left in the college baseball season there is still a chance for a lot of movement to happen in regards to who hosts a region. The latest projections from Baseball America has Rice hosting a regional, but they have Texas A&M on the bubble:

We do, however, have to acknowledge that Cal State Fullerton and Rice aren't quite SECURE as hosts with RPIs of No. 15 and No. 19, respectively ... The Owls, meanwhile, have won all of their C-USA series but have swept just one of them. C-USA isn't a great league this year, and Rice probably needed to dominate it more thoroughly to put itself in lock hosting position. Instead, the Owls enter the final weekend at UCF tied for first place, and it's easy to envision the team that wins that series hosting, with the other team on the outside looking in. We won't bet against the Owls, but the series is in Orlando. It should be fascinating.

Stacking up Texas A&M against Virginia and Arizona, the Aggies' 1-6 record against the top 25 in the RPI sticks out, compared with UVa.'s 9-9 mark and Arizona's 6-6 mark. The Aggies can still host, but they need the Wildcats or Cavaliers to falter in the next two weeks. Ole Miss is on the very periphery of this discussion; the Rebels need a blazing hot finish and must hope for three of the five teams ahead of it to stumble badly.

As mentioned there are still two weeks left for Texas A&M and Rice to secure their spot as a regional host.
