The Houston Astros were swept again and now they're really leaving a mark in the record books.

If there is anything to take from the Astros last week of play, it's that the manager wasn't the problem and a 50-year-old Roger Clemens won't be able to save this team. Most of us already knew that, but it's still worth noting.

Also worth mentioning: with the Stros being swept by the Cardinals in St. Louis this week, they became the first team since the 1943 Philadelphia A's to win seven games or fewer in a 50-game span, That's saying something for how bad the team is. just in case it's been a while since you've actually watched them play.

Houston laid an egg in the series opener against the Red Birds. This was about a combination of the Stros having to face Adam Wainwright with their pitiful lineup. Lucas Harrell has been consistent all season, but he barely had a chance in the opener as Houston fell, 7-0.

Things actually began to look up for the Stros in the second game. They even led 2-1 after four innings. But it was too good to be true. Maybe it took the Cardinals a while to get going, but eventually Jon Jay's RBI single, Bud Norris' wild pitch, and Yadier Molina's insurance run in the eighth inning stifled the Astros.

Dallas Keuchel continued his solid pitching in the finale, but the writing was on the wall for him the same way it was for his teammates leading up to Thursday night.

What we definitely know from the results we've seen all season, the Astros can fire Brad Mills, bring in Tony DeFrancesco, consider signing AARP eligible Roger Clemens, and none of it is going to make much of a difference.

The Houston Astros were swept in St. Louis on Thursday, 13-5. The Astros offense did show some life, plating five runs, or half the team's offensive total in the previous six games, but Houston pitching could only hold the Cardinals offense in check so long.

The Astros generated all five runs in the first five innings against Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook. Ben Francisco knocked in a run on a first inning single, Dallas Keuchel hit a sacrifice fly and Jose Altuve singled in a run in the second, and Altuve drove in another run with a sac fly in the fourth.

The Cardinals' David Freese hit a three-run homer off starter Dallas Keuchel in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Houston lead to 4-3. Houston third baseman Scott Moore drove in Francisco on another sac fly in the fifth. St. Louis responded with a five-run fifth, chasing Keuchel before he could record an out in the inning. Matt Holliday had a 3-run double and ended the day with four RBIs. The Cardinals added one more run in the sixth on an Allen Craig double. St. Louis put four more on the board in the eighth to complete the rout.

Westbrook was credited with the win to move to 13-9 on the year. Keuchel took the loss to fall to 1-6 on the year, as Houston's record on the road dropped to 12-51.

Not many people who love the Houston Astros are happy with the direction of the team right now, and perhaps none has been more vocal about it than Lance Berkman.

The former beloved Astros star and current St. Louis Cardinals slugger has been on record with his displeasure over the team's upcoming move to the American League. Now, in a blog from the Houston Chronicle, Berkman has added the changes to Minute Maid Park's outfield to his list of grievances.

"I hate the move to the American League and I hate what they’re doing to the outfield," the former Astro said Wednesday as he was back in St. Louis before going on a rehab assignment in Memphis. "I hate it."

The Astros have replaced the Citgo sign above the Crawford Boxes with advertising and is considering moving the signature train from above left-center field and making changes to Tal’s Hill.

In 2010, Berkman was traded from the Astros, which he helped lead to the 2005 World Series, to the New York Yankees.

Dallas Keuchel will take the mound for the Houston Astros on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. If the trend continues, Keuchel will need to keep the Cardinals at bay for Houston to have a shot at avoiding the series sweep.

Over the last three games the Astros' bats have slumped, generating just three runs and knocking out just 14 hits. In the six games since defeating the Cubs 10-1, Houston has scored only 10 runs.

Keuchel takes the mound with a 1-5 record and 4.99 ERA, with more walks (28) than strikeouts (25) on the year. Opposite him will be Jake Westbrook for the Cardinals. Westbrook holds a solid 12-9 record and 3.50 ERA, and has struck out 95 hitters over 154.1 innings this season.

On Wednesday night, the Astros jumped to a 2-1 lead after three innings on solo home runs from Brett Wallace and Chris Snyder, but were then held without a hit for the final six innings.

The Houston Astros fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Wednesday night in St. Louis, as Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse helped quiet the Houston bats. Three St. Louis pitchers combined to hold Houston to just three hits on the night.

Houston started the game well, picking up all three hits in the first three innings, including a pair of solo home runs by Brett Wallace and Chris Snyder. Lohse would settle down after that, pitching four hitless innings before departing after the seventh.

The Cardinals took the lead in the fifth inning when Jon Jay drove home Rafael Furcal with a single. Jay would later score on a Bud Norris wild pitch to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead. Yadier Molina provided an insurance run in the eighth inning by driving home Matt Holliday with a single to center.

Bud Norris (5-11) received the loss for Houston despite giving up only three runs over six innings. Jose Altuve picked up the only other hit for Houston, a double off Lohse in the third inning.

The Astros dropped to a dismal 12-50 on the road with the loss. Dallas Keuchel (1-5, 4.99 ERA) takes the mound for Houston as the Astros look to avoid the series sweep. He will face the Cardinals' Jake Westbrook (12-9, 3.50 ERA).

The Houston Astros lead the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 after four complete innings at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The Astros are looking to bounce back from last night's 7-0 shutout loss.

Despite giving up only three hits for the Cardinals, Kyle Lohse has surrendered two big flies to Houston. Brett Wallace hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the first inning, while catcher Chris Snyder hit one of his own in the third.

The Cardinals' lone run came in the second inning with two outs. Astros pitcher Bud Norris gave up a hit to Allen Craig, who was driven home on a double by Cardinals second baseman Daniel Descalso.

Norris has also given up four hits through four innings to the Cardinals. He has only one strikeout, but has yet to issue a walk. Norris is looking to improve upon his 5-10 season record, and his effort so far would also bring down his 5.23 ERA.

The Houston Astros lost a franchise-record 106 games in 2011. They're well on their way to worsening that mark this season.

After Tuesday night's 7-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals (to reach their second five-game losing streak for the month), the Astros are on pace for 111 losses in 2012 and a paltry .314 winning percentage.

If there's a silver lining, it's that the Astros (39-84) only have to win three more games to avoid matching the expansion 1962 New York Mets' 140 for most losses in the live-ball era. They don't seem destined to sink to the .248 winning percentage of the 1935 Boston Braves. Heck, they even appear to safe to not reach the dearths reached by the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who went 43-119. A .314 winning percentage wouldn't even be Top 10 among the worst seasons in the live-ball era, so they have that going for them, which is nice.

Still, winning 51 games a season after only winning 56 would easily be the worst two-year stretch in franchise history, much worse than the franchise's first two seasons in 1962-'63, when they won 64 and 66 games respectively.

But hope isn't dead yet, Astros fans. The team only sits 25.0 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates for the final Wild Card spot.
