The Baylor Bears beat Sam Houston State, 48-23, closing out what had been a close game with an absolutely dominant fourth quarter.

Baylor would trail 20-10 at the half with Sam Houston State scoring 17 points in the second quarter, surprising the Bears and threatening to walk away with a major upset. Contributing to the scare was the inability of the Baylor offense to convert several prime opportunities, wasting easy scoring chances.

The Bears would come alive after halftime, however, with a quick Nick Florence touchdown pass to Jordan Najvar just 50 seconds into the second half and a touchdown pass to Terrence Williams on the next drive. Sam Houston State would respond with two field goals to start the fourth quarter to pull to within 24-23, but Baylor would pull away with 24 unanswered points to close out the game.

Florence was 24-of-41 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, also throwing an interception in the final seconds of the first half. Jarred Salubi would lead the Bears with 83 yards rushing on 17 carries, with the team racking up 232 yards on 39 carries for the game.

Baylor would outgain Sam Houston State 544-403 for the game, with the defense forcing four turnovers.

The Bears will take on Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 21, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT and coverage on ESPN.

Baylor traded field goals with SHSU in the first quarter before things picked up in the second. The Bearkats took a surprising lead in the second quarter on Miguel Antonio's second field goal of the game. Baylor responded with a five-play, 77-yard touchdown drive capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass to from Nick Florence to Terrence Williams.

It was all SHSU from there. Quarterback Brian Bell rushed for a touchdown to regain the lead for the Kats. Then Bell connected with running back Timothy Flanders for a 26-yard touchdown toss to give SHSU a commanding 20-10 advantage before the half.

Sam Houston State faces Baylor in one of its two matchups against FBS opponents this season after playing in the FCS title game last season.

Sam Houston State gets a rematch of their 2010 season opener against Baylor when the two teams go head-to-head at Floyd Casey Stadium on Saturday. The Bears are obviously heavily favored over the FCS Southland Conference Bearkats, but this is not the same SHSU team it hammered two years ago.

Since that game, the Bearkats have won 21 of 26 games and are 15-1 in their last 16 games, with the one loss coming to North Dakota State in the FCS Championship at the end of what had been an undefeated season for the Kats in 2011.

SHSU players to watch in this one are going to be running back Timothy Flanders, and wide receivers Torrance Williams, Richard Sincere and Trey Diller. Flanders, who made his debut with the Bearkats in 2010 against Baylor after transferring from Kansas State, became the schools all-time leading rusher against Incarnate Word last week.

On defense for SHSU, pay attention to the defensive backs - All-American safety Darnell Taylor and cornerback Daxton Swanson, with Ken Jenkins at safety as well. Defensive end J.T. Cleveland leads the Bearkats up front.

The game will be broadcast at 6 p.m. CT on Fox College Sports.
